About Bob & Jenna Torres

We’re Bob and Jenna Torres, two long-time vegans who like to use our skills and talents to provide vegans and aspiring vegans with support, community, and entertainment. We do this in a few ways:

  • We wrote a book to help you go vegan, stay vegan, and deal with life around non-vegans;
  • We host an online radio show that currently gets thousands of downloads each week at Vegan Freak Radio;
  • We blog about living as a vegan in a world of omnivores at Vegan Freak Blog;

In addition, we also run Tofu Hound Press, which publishes books on veganism and animal rights.

We try hard to practice what we preach. We believe that veganism needs to be about more than what you eat. Specifically, we think that everyone needs to use their talents and skills — whatever they may be — to promote the cause of veganism and animal rights.

We are authors, scholars, and animal rights activists prominent in the field. Either of us or both of us have been a source for stories in both US domestic and international media outlets, including The New York Times, Newsweek, and The Guardian’s Sunday Observer. One of us or both of us have also been interviewed for several published books on vegetarianism and the animal rights movement, and done several radio appearances in the US and Canada.

About each of us specifically:

Bob Torres

I completed my undergrad work at Penn State in Agricultural Science (BS) and Philosophy (BA). After that, I went on to get my PhD from Cornell University in Development Sociology. During my time at Cornell, I had a Fulbright Scholarship to Spain where I studied agricultural transitions among small-scale farmers. A recovering academic, I spent 7 years teaching sociology at Universities in the Northeast US. I now work primarily as a writer and publisher. In addition to Vegan Freak, I’m also author of Making A Killing: The Political Economy of Animal Rights (AK Press, 2007). Currently, I’m also working on several other books, including editing a volume that takes a critical look at nanotechnology for Rowman & Littlefield publishers called Nanotechnology, Social Change, and the Environment. Work aside, I enjoy running, playing Grand Theft Auto IV, messing around on my computer, and reading too many books at once. You can keep up with my goings-on over at my homepage, or by following me on twitter.

Jenna Torres

Jenna has a BA/BS from Penn State University, a PhD from Cornell University in Spanish linguistics, and is currently working at a small liberal arts university in upstate New York. In an attempt to not go crazy in the frozen tundra and rural area, in addition to all the work she does with various parts of Vegan Freak/Tofu Hound Press she enjoys spending time with Bob and her dogs and cat, running and hiking, reading a ton, and playing video games.

Hello! I love your podcast! I’m really struggling with becoming a vegan. I love cheese so much. After a beer or two at the pub nothing is better than some nachos or potato skins. I know it’s wrong but I still eat cheese. I can’t seem to reconcile my love for cheese and wanting to become a vegan. How do I take cheese out of my diet? Sincerely, Jenny

Hi Jenny, thanks for the kind words. :)

There’s only one solution: stop eating it now. If you need help with that, I posted this part of our book because of your comment:

You should probably also read this, another part from our book:

You can do it. Just remind yourself why it is important to you.
